Social Media: Is It Helping Our Mental Health or Harming It?
Social media has become a major part of our daily lives. It helps us connect with friends, share experiences, and discover new ideas. But could the same platforms also affect our mental health in negative ways? 🔬 What does research tell us? A 2023 U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory reported that up to 95% of teenagers aged 13–17 use social media, with more than one-third saying they use it almost constantly. However, researchers still do not fully understand its long-term effects on young people’s mental health. 🔎 But here’s an important fact: Research does not show that social media affects everyone in the same way. A 2022 umbrella review of 25 reviews found that associations between social media use and mental health were generally weak or inconsistent in many studies. The effects can depend on how people use social media, what they see, their personal circumstances, and whether online activity interferes with sleep or real-life relationships. Do you think social media is having a negative impact on our mental health, or does it bring more benefits than harm?
